Moving from long trail races to ultra is not about running 100 kilometres in training. Build and connect five capacities while keeping enough margin to reach the start fresh.

What really changes from 50K to 100K

Distance rises, but prolonged exposure and the accumulation of small errors are what transform the event.

Specificity

Six sessions that build different capacities

They do not all belong in every week. Two demanding constraints are often enough; the rest supports continuity.

Five connected ultra capacities: endurance, climbing, downhill, nutrition and night autonomy.
No single capacity can sustainably compensate for the other four.

Build frequency and sustainable time without excessive fatigue.

Keep it truly easy; consistency beats a heroic session.

Active uphill hiking

Make run-hike transitions efficient, with or without poles.

Match slope and duration to the course rather than chasing arbitrary speed.

Progressive downhill

Prepare eccentric load, foot placement and technical clarity.

Increase controlled exposure first; never speed and volume together.

Strength training

Support economy, force and musculoskeletal tolerance.

Keep it away from major downhill work and reduce it before key rehearsals.

Specific long run

Test pacing, carrying, intake, feet and clothing over several hours.

Finish early enough to absorb it; it should not simulate 100K.

Dusk-to-night sequence

Check lighting, temperature control, alertness and navigation.

Practise darkness, not sleep deprivation; protect sleep around the session.

Back-to-back days can teach you to restart with residual fatigue, but they are optional and useful only when recovered without a sudden load spike.

Field validation

Run a rehearsal, not a hidden race

Four to six weeks out, verify how the plan’s elements interact during a controlled outing.

A successful rehearsal creates decisions. If it only proves you can suffer, it is too costly or poorly defined.

Complete race rehearsal with shoes, vest, poles, headlamp, food, shell and route card.
The rehearsal verifies the whole system under controlled conditions.

Final weeks

Remove fatigue without erasing your reference points

Taper progressively lowers volume while keeping some frequency and short athlete-specific stimuli.

Last large load

Place it early enough to recover; do not try to rescue an incomplete build.

Volume

Reduce progressively while retaining short familiar outings.

Technique

Keep brief climbing and downhill reminders without major muscle damage.

Logistics

Finalise pack, batteries, weather, travel and aid plan without late product changes.

Meta-analyses support lower volume while retaining selected stimuli, but accumulated fatigue and individual response guide the final adjustment.
