A 100-mile race or 160K+ event is not just a longer 100K: it is a format where sleep, crew logistics and decisions made under extreme fatigue become the central subject, not a footnote.

A change of scale, not just of length

Beyond 100K, duration itself becomes the subject.

Distance grows by roughly 60%, but real duration can nearly double once fatigue and slowdown are accounted for. This is no longer just “running for longer” — several mechanisms change in nature.

Multiple nights

Most 100-mile races cross at least one full night, sometimes two — sleep becomes a race variable, not a minor discomfort.

Cumulative pace drift

Slowdown is no longer linear: every additional hour costs proportionally more than at the 100K format.

Crew and pacers

Many races at this distance allow crew support at aid stations or pacers on certain sections — never everywhere, never without checking the dated rules.

Extended logistics

Drop bags, clothing changes, multiple shoe pairs and a crew team become standard rather than optional.

Late-race clarity

After 24 to 30 hours of effort and a sleep deficit, judgment degrades before the legs give out — decisions must be prepared in advance.

Fuelling over time

No fuelling strategy stays identical over 30 hours: gut tolerance and appetite shift with fatigue and time of night.

Tighter cut-offs

Intermediate cut-offs become proportionally tighter, because a small pace drift compounds over many more hours.

Weather across cycles

The race can cross a full day-night-day cycle, with far wider temperature swings than a single-day event.

Core rule: what changes beyond 100K is not mainly that the body suffers longer — it is that the decision-making system must hold up longer than the body does.

Race day (and night)

Think in effort phases, not target pace.

Over a duration this long, a single target pace loses meaning within the first hours. The useful marker becomes perceived effort (RPE) per phase, not a per-kilometre number.

  1. Phase 1
    First hours, in daylight

    Stay clearly below what feels possible: the margin saved here pays off in comfort twelve hours later.

    You can eat, talk and handle logistics without feeling rushed.
  2. Phase 2
    First night

    Accept a deliberate slowdown rather than fighting the natural drop in night-time alertness.

    Headlamp, layers and pace are adjusted before cold or drowsiness sets in.
  3. Phase 3
    Second day or second night

    Treat accumulated fatigue as a planned input, not an emergency to fight.

    Decisions (food, clothing, pace) still follow the plan, even if slower.
  4. Phase 4
    Final kilometres

    Simplify as much as possible: fewer decisions, more pre-written reference points.

    You can clearly name what is left to do, even while tired.

What the dated rules actually allow

Crew and pacers: useful only where the rules permit them.

Many 100-mile races allow a form of support that shorter formats forbid — but rules vary widely between races, never by default.

Crew access points

Some aid stations allow a personal crew with gear, spare clothing or a prepared meal.

Check which ones the dated rules actually permit — not every aid station allows this.

Pacers

A companion may sometimes run alongside you from a given point, often only at night or over the second half of the race.

The permitted role (encouragement, safety) and starting point vary by event.

Drop bags

Bags prepared in advance and dropped at certain points let you change shoes, clothing or nutrition without carrying everything from the start.

Prepare them as decisions already made, not a last-minute improvisation.

Without planned support

If no personal support is allowed at a given point, your personal self-sufficiency remains what you can provide alone until the next confirmed point.

Never count on help that is not explicitly described in the rules.

The principle stays the same as ultra self-sufficiency: crew, pacers and drop bags only count when explicitly authorized and described in the event’s dated rules.

Before fatigue decides for you

Deciding to stop or continue, with a clear head.

After 24 hours or more of effort and a sleep deficit, judgment degrades before the body gives out. Thresholds decided before the start avoid improvising under extreme fatigue.

Decide

  • Do you have a personal time threshold, stricter than the official cut-off, at which you reassess?
  • Have you written in advance what triggers a deliberate slowdown rather than a forced continuation?
  • Do your crew or pacers know how to recognize signs that justify stopping, even if you insist on continuing?
  • Have you planned at which aid station a DNF decision stays logistically manageable?

Signals outside the scope of performance

  • Confusion, disorientation or inability to answer simple questions: this is outside the scope of performance, not a race decision anymore.
  • Pain clearly changing your gait for several kilometres: treat it as a stop signal, not discomfort to push through.
  • Inability to drink or eat over a prolonged period: dehydration and energy deficit worsen faster than at a shorter format.
  • Persistent vomiting, faintness or chest pain: stop and seek appropriate help without delay.

Final weeks

A slightly more cautious taper than before a 100K.

Recovery time after an effort of this scale is longer and more variable — the taper before it deserves the same caution.

Last long run

Place it noticeably earlier than before a 100K, so you arrive with legs that are truly fresh, not merely rested.

Pre-race sleep

Prioritise good-quality sleep on the nights before the start — you cannot make up a sleep deficit during the race itself.

Crew logistics

Finalise drop bags, crew plan and written instructions for your team early enough to avoid improvising the day before.

Realistic expectations

Accept that a major slowdown on the second day or second night is part of the format, not a sign of failed preparation.

Taper principles stay close to a 100K; what changes here is the safety margin taken on sleep and recovery before the start.
